United Nations Day History
United Nations Day commemorates the establishment of the United Nations (UN) and highlights its objectives and achievements. As a global intergovernmental organization, the UN primarily promotes peace, security, sustainable development, and respect for human rights. As a member of the UN, South Africa benefits from and contributes to these collective efforts.
The United Nations was officially formed on October 24, 1945, to prevent future world conflicts and facilitate international cooperation. This date coincided with the coming into effect of the UN Charter, which serves as the organization's guiding document. As one of the founding members, South Africa actively engages in various UN programs and initiatives, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and peacekeeping operations. The country also participates in UN agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to address local and global challenges.
On United Nations Day, the South African government, schools, and civil society organizations often organize events showcasing the nation's commitment to the UN's core principles. These activities may include discussions, seminars, and cultural programs intended to raise awareness about the importance of international cooperation and sustainable development. Furthermore, South Africans use this occasion to address domestic issues in alignment with UN goals and reiterate the country's pledge to contribute to a more equitable and prosperous world. Celebrated annually on October 24, United Nations Day serves as a reminder of the significance of global unity and collaboration in overcoming shared challenges.

In 1974, under the UN General Assembly resolution 3207, South Africa was suspended from participation in the work of the Assembly, due to its apartheid policies. It was the first time in UN history that a member state had been suspended.
