The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded 1917 and initially comprised five teams. The teams were the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas and the Quebec Bulldogs
The first individual trophy was the Hart Trophy, first awarded in 1924 to the league’s most valuable player.
The NHL currently encompasses 32 franchises, of which seven are located in Canada and 25 in the United States
The Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league's top goaltender, is named after the legendary Canadian goaltender Georges Vezina, who played his entire career with the Montreal Canadiens between 1910 and 1925. The trophy was first awarded in the 1926-27 season.
The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, combined with a high standard of playing ability. Frank Boucher holds the record for the most Lady Byng Trophies won, with a total of seven.
